Merger of Datto and Autotask gets the go-ahead
The go ahead has been given for the merger of Autotask and Datto. The formal acquisition by Vista Equity Partners of data protection specialist Datto has been completed, allowing the business to be fully integrated with Autotask – the specialist provider of business management for MSPs that is part of Vista and one of Synaxon’s key partners. Together, Autotask and Datto already work with 13,000 MSPs worldwide, so together they are an even stronger force.
Cisco provides ETA for market-leading switches and routers
Cisco has made its best-selling network products even more secure, integrating its Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA) into the Catalyst switch range and its ASR and ISR routers. ETA gives customers more detailed information on external threats. Based on Cisco’s Digital Network Architecture, ETA searches for malware activity in encrypted traffic and sends data for immediate risk analysis and reporting via Cisco’s Stealthwatch Management Console.
Cloud services growing 3X faster than IaaS
According to the analyst Synergy Research, cloud services sales are now growing over three times faster than cloud infrastructure and software. It also noted that the value of datacentre acquisitions doubled last year to $20 billion as service providers migrated customers into the private cloud and this trend is expected to accelerate over coming years. IBM recently announced that it is now generating over a fifth of its revenues from its cloud services, platform and infrastructure offerings.
CPU competition heats up as AMD keeps Ryzen price cut
AMD has intensified competition in the CPU market by making permanent its 300%-off special offers from Black Friday and Christmas on its Ryzen processors. It has also announced plans to launch new additions to the range featuring integrated Radeon RX Vega graphics for desktop PCs. More systems featuring Ryzen can be expected to reach the market soon.
Now PCM invades Scotland
The Giant US reseller PCM, which has been moving into the UK market through acquisition and has reportedly been aggressively recruiting staff from other resellers, especially in the north-west. It is now moving north of the border, snapping-up one of Scotland’s premier Cisco partners, Provista. PCM bought Liverpool-based cloud services business, Stack Group, in September last year.
Microsoft buys flash specialist
Microsoft has acquired Avere Systems, which specialises in flash systems for large-scale apps and multi-platform, hybrid environments. The firm’s customers include top names in media and entertainment, including Sony Pictures and Moving Picture Company. Microsoft plans to develop Avere’s technology to support complex high-performance workloads on Azure.
Amazon to open Windows for Alexa this spring
Amazon has announced plans to put its Alexa digital assistant system onto PCs. The company expects to make an app available for Windows in the spring. Acer, Asus, Lenovo and HP have all announced plans to integrate the voice recognition onto their PCs.
Channel’s top female execs are honoured
Two of the IT channel’s top female executives have been named in the New Year’s Honours list. Vin Murria, who is a non-exec’ director for leading reseller Softcat and security vendor Sophos, has been awarded an OBE; while Jacqueline de Rojas, currently president of industry group TechUK, receives a CBE.
